Adi Kailash Yatra 2025-26 Itinerary

If you are planning to visit Valley of Flowers or Hemkund Sahib, then you will surely spend some time in Ghangaria. This small Himalayan settlement is the last village on the trek route and works as the main basecamp for both destinations. Situated at an altitude of around 3,050 metres (10,000 feet) in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Ghangaria is surrounded by lush green slopes, snow-covered peaks and the sound of mountain rivers.

Table of Contents

Location and Importance

Ghangaria is located in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve area. From here, the trek route splits into two parts — one towards Valley of Flowers and another towards Hemkund Sahib. That is why it is an important stop for trekkers, pilgrims and nature lovers.

You cannot take any vehicle beyond Govindghat. From Govindghat, you travel 4 km by road till Pulna village. From Pulna, it is a 10–11 km trek to Ghangaria. This is the only way to reach here.

Atmosphere and Vibe

The village is active only from May to October. In winter, heavy snowfall blocks the route and the locals move to lower areas. During the trekking season, you will find a lively atmosphere here. Trekkers from all over India and foreign countries stay here for a night or two. The sound of the Lakshman Ganga river flowing next to the village adds to the charm.

In the evening, the market street comes alive with dhabas serving hot food, souvenir shops selling woollens and walking sticks, and small stalls offering pakoras and chai.

Facilities in Ghangaria

Even though it is a remote village, Ghangaria has basic facilities for travellers:

  • Accommodation: GMVN guest house, private lodges, budget hotels and Gurudwara stay.

  • Food: Mostly vegetarian food is available. The Gurudwara serves free langar (meals) to all visitors.

  • Shops: Small shops selling trekking essentials, medicines, raincoats, and dry snacks.

  • Electricity: Limited supply, often from generators. Keep a power bank.

  • Mobile Network: Very weak or no signal. Sometimes BSNL works, but not reliable.

Trekking Routes from Ghangaria

  • To Valley of Flowers: Around 3.7 km from Ghangaria to the entry gate, then further walking inside the valley. Trek is moderate and full of scenic views.

  • To Hemkund Sahib: Around 6 km uphill from Ghangaria. The route is steep and challenging, taking you to 4,329 metres altitude.

Best Time to Stay in Ghangaria

  • Mid-June to Mid-September: Best time for Valley of Flowers bloom.

  • June to October: Best time for Hemkund Sahib Yatra.
Avoid coming too early or too late in the season as the weather can be unpredictable.

Things to Do in Ghangaria

Even though it is mainly a basecamp, you can enjoy:

  • Evening walk near Lakshman Ganga river.

  • Visiting Ghangaria Gurudwara for langar and peaceful stay.

  • Exploring the small market street.

  • Watching the surrounding mountains change colours at sunset.

Demographic and Culture

Ghangaria is not a permanent settlement. Local people belong mostly to nearby villages like Bhyundar and Govindghat. During season, they run hotels, shops, and mule services here. In winter, they return to lower altitudes. Most locals speak Garhwali and Hindi. Sikh pilgrims heading to Hemkund Sahib are also a big part of the seasonal crowd.

Travel Tip

Book your stay in advance during peak months (July–August). Carry cash as there are no ATMs here. If you are visiting both Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib, keep at least 3 nights in Ghangaria — one night before VOF, one before Hemkund Sahib, and one for rest.

If you are planning your trek, you can read our detailed Valley of Flowers Trek Itinerary where we have explained the complete route, cost, and tips. Ghangaria will definitely be the most important stop in that journey.
